Grand street neighborhood initiative
As part of our Grand Street Neighborhood Initiative to create a vibrant commercial district and improve our community’s quality of life, we provide key services + host various programs designed to take care of our neighborhood and create a welcoming environment for shoppers + residents. Our programs fall into 5 major categories central to our initiative.
Our street sweeping team works 7 days a week to keep Grand Street gorgeous through sun, rain, and snow. In fiscal year 2019 we spent 2,800+ hours sweeping up 5,700+ buckets of litter, removing 159 incidents of graffiti, and monitoring streetscape conditions as part of our core mission to ensure a beautiful commercial corridor.
Through our newsletter, social media, documentaries, and blog, we share the news happening in our neighborhood to a network of 5,000+ followers. We focus on promoting our small businesses in order to create connections between our retail community and local residents.
We invest in public art murals on building facades from Brooklyn artists, collaborate with local artists on community projects + produce short films documenting those works and our neighborhood. Through our these efforts, we have installed 15 new murals on Grand Street in just the past 3 years.
We partner with the Horticultural Society of NY to plant Brooklyn native perennials inside our tree beds throughout the district to beautify our neighborhood. With funding from Council Member Reynoso we also installed 22 additional tree guards last summer to protect those plantings and keep our trees safe + air clean.
We host annual events such as our winter + summer Restaurant Weeks, St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl, and street fairs to provide opportunities for residents to try new businesses + engage with our district in new and fun ways. We also host e-waste recycling events and decorate Grand Street with lights for the holiday season.
